Last year around this time, Kunda and I had Chaoshan beef hotpot in Guangzhou, but this year his visit back to Taiwan became a real challenge. After his 14-day quarantine, he swung through Taichung with his family and invited me and an old college friend (an accountant) to Shijiu Jin izakaya on Xitun Road, near the Central Taiwan Science Park, where we raised our glasses and caught up on over a decade since grad school. He talked about US business trips, meeting high-ranking officials, and joining a video call with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos—things we could never have imagined while studying—and it felt like a precious reunion.
