Today I split my time between 尋俠堂 Wine Shop in Taipei’s Wenshan District and Chapter One in Xindian. I went to 尋俠堂 because Facebook kept recommending it, and there I had two southern Italian wines and one New Zealand wine by the glass while chatting with the owner’s wife, Teacher Yu; the place has been running for over ten years, now with a 200-ping space, a basement cellar, food service, and thousands of wines, which was impressive. After a meal at Yulon City, I moved on to Chapter One, where owner Ben—who used to do Art Deco installation work for luxury homes—has been running the shop in Xindian for over seven years and even used AI to build the website and develop a wine-index methodology; we happily talked over Australian and central Italian wines, and what started as a few glasses turned into two bottles opened by the owner, finishing close to midnight though the shop closes at 9.
