Travel Notes

Location: Chiayi - Fenqihu Railway Bento (Sifang Bamboo Restaurant) Travel Notes: While visiting the mysterious Tea Mountain Village near Danaigu, we stayed overnight in Fenqihu. I forgot which bento place my friend JamesPanda recommended, so I asked the hotel owner. He suggested an old shop called Sifang Bamboo, located away from the old street near bamboo groves. Along the Alishan Railway, Fenqihu is famous for railway bentos since trains used to stop here for passengers to buy them. The owner said many advertised bentos are just packaging, and the real deal is at old shops like this. The bento costs NT$60 with pork chop, pickled radish, pickled mustard greens, and more. It's not gourmet, but the nostalgic feel is what matters. The shop is friendly and doesn't overcharge tourists. If you're in Fenqihu, give it a try! :) By Morgan, evening of April 2, 2004.
