Location: Dandong, Liaoning
Travel Notes: Yalu River Broken Bridge, Dandong, Liaoning. Two weeks ago, I crossed the Tumen River into North Korean territory. Today, I'm standing on the Yalu River, gazing at Sinuiju across the way. The two river names I memorized from textbooks as a child—I've finally walked and seen them in person. The original Yalu River Bridge was started by Japan in the late Guangxu era (1909) and destroyed during the U.S.-Korean War (1950). The current bridge deck was repaired by China in 1993, while the North Korean side只剩下桥墩, so you can only look across, not cross. (There are other bridges now to cross.) Looking at one river with two banks—one side with high-rises, the other with forests—the wheel of history keeps turning forward. We are all just tiny parts of it, and I'm grateful to live in a region and era without war. So, I just strive to live more fully in the present~ By Morgan on 2019.8.18
