Location: Guangdong, Jieyang City, Jieyang Confucian Temple, Old and New Urban Areas Travel notes summary: The origin of Jieyang's name dates back to the Qin dynasty. After the Qin pacified the Baiyue region, they established Nanhai Commandery, and Jieyang was one of its counties. It lies west of Chaozhou and south of Meizhou, and is one of the three cities of Chaoshan (Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang) (map in the comments~). Here, there's a Confucian temple from the Song dynasty, right next to Jinxian Gate. It now enshrines Confucius, making it one of the well-known Confucian temples across the country. In the afternoon, I started from the old town area, wandering under the weathered arcades of Zhongshan Road and along Daitong Street, lined with old hardware stores, listening to the Chaoshan dialect everywhere (Chaoshan dialect shares some similarities with Minnan dialect, being a sub-dialect of Minnan). Passing by the City God Temple, Tianhou Palace, and Shuangfeng Temple, I soaked in the ancient atmosphere of this millennia-old city.
